Course Description

3709. Accounting Information Systems. Study of systems analysis, design, and implementation within the context of an accounting information system. Topics include a treatment of the business computing environment, security and control of information, the accounting information system as a component of the management information system, and decision support and expert systems. Prereq.: "C" or better in ACCT 2602 or ACCT 2602H and 2.5 overall GPA. 3 s.h.

Course objectives include opportunities for students to learn how accounting systems provide information to decision-makers and to provide students with a solid foundation in the knowledge and skills needed for success in today’s information- and technology-rich business environment. Areas of emphasis include developing a robust understanding of the following:

  • How accounting information systems are organized to provide financial and non-financial information for decision making;
  • System documentation techniques (such as flowcharts and entity-relationship [ER] diagrams);
  • Major business transaction processing cycles (such as the revenue cycle, expenditure cycle, payroll cycle, and financial statement close process) that are common to most organizations and how they relate to one another;
  • Philosophy and methods for identifying organizational risks and developing internal controls;
  • Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems
