Students are required to complete 100 contact hours and are expected to document them in Exxat within one week of completion. Otherwise, the hours may be not applicable to your total hourly requirement. Misrepresentation of clinical hours or falsification of patient encounters will result in automatic failure of NURS 7023 and dismissal from the program.
A digital evaluation through Exxat must be completed by your preceptor at the at the end of the term. Contact faculty with any questions regarding this if necessary.
50 hours must be completed by the end of the 4th week
A satisfactory evaluation and total of 100 hours must be completed by the end of the 7th week
Clinical faculty will make a site visit (virtual or in-person) to your clinical facility one or more times during the semester. The site visit, the Clinical Evaluations and the clinical journal will provide faculty information regarding your progress in clinical.
To successfully pass clinical you must do the following:
1) achieve an average of an 80% on clinical activities;
2) receive a satisfactory evaluation from your preceptor;
3) receive a satisfactory evaluation from your clinical faculty;
4) complete all clinical journals and logs.
5) respond to your faculty in a timely manner if you are asked about your journal or clinical records.
Clinical Requirements/Expectations
Each student will be required to identify a potential preceptor. Before you make any contact with a potential preceptor, you should send the name of the preceptor to the course faculty for the term. You should not contact preceptors without discussing the potential preceptor with course faculty. You will be given information to share with the preceptors regarding expectations of the students.
IMPORTANT: Do not discontinue the use of your clinical site or add a clinical site without the knowledge and consent of your clinical faculty. If you are having difficulty for any reason at a clinical site, please call or e-mail your clinical faculty. If you decide to send e-mail, be sure to label your e-mail in such a way that your clinical faculty knows the priority of response needed. (For example: Clinical problem today, call or e-mail please.) Avoid sending notes added to the end of journals or logs, as these are considered assignments and are not read with the same priority as an urgent note.
Please keep your clinical faculty informed at all times of your clinical schedule. If you are unable to be at your clinical site on a given day for any reason, you must notify BOTH the clinical site and your clinical faculty.
Sign your documentation at the clinical site with your first initial and last name, RN, YSU Graduate Nursing Education Student. You are required to wear your YSU ID that identifies you as an RN and a student.
Document your clinical hours in Exxat within seven days of completing them. Preceptors will have to approve your hours through Exxat and will receive an evaluation to fill out at the end of the term electronically.
Professional dress is expected while you are on site for clinical experiences. Please note that closed-toe shoes are an OSHA requirement in clinical areas. Promptness is also expected. Remember you are a guest in the practicum site, and a representative of Youngstown State University. On occasion your preceptor may have additional expectations of you, i.e., you may be expected to stay until the practicum experience has ended or during the lunch hour for presentations or to read articles that will improve your clinical experience. It is part of your professional role to embrace these opportunities enthusiastically.
Under no circumstances should you ever discuss problems encountered at any clinical site with anyone other than your clinical faculty. This is to protect the privacy and reputation of clinical sites and clinical preceptors. Please have your faculty contact numbers with you in the clinical setting so that you can call if there is an emergency. If you are unsure about a problem at the clinical site, it is always better to contact your faculty to discuss the situation.
Site Visits
Site visits are scheduled once per student per term. For the site visit, your clinical faculty will virtually visit the clinical site and will need to see you interacting with students/patients. Please notify your preceptor when the faculty is planning a site visit. Site visits will be made on a date and time arranged in advance by the student and the clinical faculty. On arrival, introduce the faculty member to your preceptor, and orient the faculty briefly to the site. Prior to closing the site visit, the clinical faculty will try to take a few minutes with the preceptor to discuss your progress. Your clinical progress will be evaluated at each site visit. Your ability to establish rapport with the students/patients, maintain all safety measures, use therapeutic communication skills, collaborate with your preceptor, and provide appropriate student/patient education are all noted.
