Course Description

1504. Clinical Skills Lab I. This clinical skills laboratory course provides supervised, hands-on instruction in foundational ophthalmic testing procedures. Students develop introductory proficiency in visual acuity testing, autorefraction, confrontation visual fields, extraocular muscle (EOM) assessment, and ocular dominance testing. Emphasis is placed on proper technique, patient communication, infection control, documentation, and adherence to scope of practice. Skills are practiced in a controlled laboratory environment and evaluated through competency-based assessments. This course prepares students for advanced ophthalmic skills labs and formal clinical experiences. 2 credit hours; 60 lab contact hours 2 s.h.

This course introduces students to professional ethics, legal and regulatory considerations, and foundational clinical skills used in ophthalmic practice. Emphasis is placed on ethical decision-making, patient confidentiality, informed consent, and the legal responsibilities of ophthalmic technicians. Students are introduced to the purpose and process of basic ophthalmic clinical skills, including visual acuity (VA), visual function and impairment, autorefraction (AR), confrontation visual fields (CVF), extraocular muscle (EOM) assessment, and ocular dominance testing. Introductory pharmacology concepts related to safe medication handling and technician responsibilities are also presented. This course prepares students for supervised clinical practice and progressive ophthalmic skills coursework.
